IBTIKAR USIM | DISEMBER 2018
The issue of global warming has long been debated among Malaysians. Extreme heat and unpredictable rain are the problems closely related to this issue. The massive floods that occurred in the East Peninsular Malaysia in 2015 for instance, have raised concerns among Malaysians. The floods did not only result in a mass evacuation of thousands of Malaysians, but had also greatly affected many of the hospital patients that were weak and required constant medical observations such as those with stroke, kidney failure or even those suffering from other old-age related diseases. The unpredictable adverse weather experienced in the country have also resulted in intermittent heavy rainfalls and hurricanes, which to some extent, have caused many difficulties to these patients, including those who would need to receive after-patient treatment such as stroke rehab exercises. These groups of patients would have to be constantly monitored by medical staff to ensure full recovery. The unpredictable weather, along with the busy schedule that many patients have to endure daily, may also to some extent, cause longer travelling time for these patients to receive treatments at the hospital. In relation to this, such problems can be solved with the latest technology--referred to as Cyber Physical System or CPS (Robotics and wireless) in the imminent era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (IR 4.0). The CPS will ease patients that need rehabilitation attention in the form of rehab exercise so that it can be carried out at the comfort of their homes. At present, a few Rehab hospitals have made attempts to introduce ……… Virtual Reality (VR) technology that includes introducing patients to the virtual bird-catching interactive activity. This activity demands the patients to perform active movements with the aim for the patients to try and capture as many virtual birds as possible. To date, among the bodies that have rigorously strived to introduce the use of VR technology in its rehab programme in the country is still scarce, and one such body is that of PERKESO REHAB in Malacca. One of the VR games is Mira Rehab which originates from the UK. The collaborative effort regarding the use of VR with universities and companies in Malaysia has won the coveted Ungku Omar Newton Fund Grant to offer rehab exercises required by patients in their after- treatment programmes. Rather than having to travel to the hospital for their treatments, these patients can complete the rehab programmes at the comfort of their homes. Moreover, they also get to enjoy the experience of VR games designed for them that combine the fun element of playing games with their much- needed daily exercises (Exercise and Fun). As for USIM, we are performing predictive analytics to forecast the improvement of the patients. When dealing with Big Data, we need to consider retrieving the data using cache memory. Aligned with the country’s niche in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and also IR 4.0, USIM is playing a leading role in presenting the data into simple information for medical doctors. 26 IBTIKAR Intelligent Rehab
